Soviet composer Boris Vladimirovich Asafiev (1884-1949) is one of the central figures in the history of Soviet music. As a composer, he was the prolific creator of no fewer than twenty-seven ballets, almost single-handedly furnishing the bulk of the repertoire to Soviet ballet companies for many decades. Probably the best known and most highly regarded of these is The Fountain of Bakhchisarai (1932-34), set to a libretto by Nikolai Volkov. Based on an early poem by Aleksandr Pushkin, The Fountain of Bakhchisarai is set in an exotic Crimean kingdom and tells the story of the Khan Girei's passionate love for a Polish princess he abducts from her homeland. Saturated with the pseudo-oriental style Asafiev admired in such earlier Russian composers as Aleksandr Borodin, The Fountain of Bakhchisarai was one of the most popular of all Soviet ballets. This is a cello solo from the 3rd act of this ballet.
