He came from a family of musicians and learned to play the cello at a very young age with Cupis and Martin BerthauIt, who founded the French school of cello. At 21, Bréval became a cello teacher and was on his way to becoming one of the greatest virtuosos of his time; with Jean-Pierre Duport and Jean -Baptiste Janson the Elder. In 1776 he became a member of the Société A endémique des Enfants d'Apollon.
