Ibert's music is characterized by considerable diversity of moods from festive and light-hearted (Un chapeau de paille d'ltalie) to descriptive and evocative (Escales) and is often tinged with a bit of humor. Although he was not a member of Les Six, his music, like this etude for solo cello, shares many similar characteristics. All the elements of his musical language except that of harmony relate closely to classical tradition thus easily placing him in the lineage of neoclassical composers. His music displays influence of other composers throughout his lifetime (Debussy, Dukas, Roussel and Bartok to name a few), but the blending of tenderness with irony, lyricism with burlesque are characteristics uniquely his own.
