In March 1953 Poulenc made one of his infrequent concert tours in the company of the noted cellist Pierre Fournier. It was during this trip that Poulenc met with Cuido Valcarenghi in Milan, who suggested he compose an opera based on Georges Bernanos' film script Dialogues of the Carmelites. With music for Dialogues occupying his mind, Poulenc spent several weeks at his sister Jeanne Manceaux's estate Le Tremblay in Normandy during the month of July. While there he arranged the keyboard score of his Suite frangaise for violoncello and piano, inscribing the manuscript to Pierre Fournier. Arranging the Suite francaise was one of the few distractions Poulenc allowed to take precedence over his near obsession with Dialogues.
The present edition has been prepared for presentation at the July 1997 World Cello Congress II, to whom this composition is dedicated.
