Allegedly composed in the space of just three hours, the piece has been the target of much invective with the piano's endless, amateurish arpeggio passages, and double octaves. Malinconia contains highly virtuoso writing for both instruments; its mood is of fervent defiance rather than resignation. Malinconia was originally entitled 'Fantasia' and was dedicated to the Finnish conductor and cellist Georg Schneevoigt.

| Sibelius composed his longest surviving piece for cello and piano, Malinconia, Op. 20 in the aftermath of his youngest daughter death. This work was originally listed as Op. 25, but when Sibelius later revised his opus list he removed the designation 'Op. 20' from his opera The Maiden in the Tower, allocating it instead to Malinconia. |
