Martinu - Flute sonata
Martinu - Flute sonata. You can download the PDF sheet music Martinu - Flute sonata on this page. Bohuslav Martinu (1890-1959), like Dvorak, was in exile in the United States when he wrote this, his only flute sonata (it is called No. 1, but there is no other). However, in his case the exile was not self-imposed. The composer and his wife, Charlotte, had left Paris for the United States in 1940 as refugees of the war, and he wrote the sonata in 1945 while on holiday on Cape Cod, in Massachusetts. Complete in little more than a week, the sonata is dedicated to Martinu's friend, Georges Laurent, then first flute With the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The sonata is in three movements, which the first and third are quick and full of the spontaneity of motor rhythm so characteristic of Martinu. The slow middle movement shows the composer at his most lyrical and intense, while in the last movement he wittily includes the call of the whippoorwill, which he heard every night during his summer sojourn on Cape Cod.
