Prokofiev's D major Sonata, known as "No. 2" though it was finished before No. 1. The original Flute Sonata was written in 1943, and the violin version came the next year, leaving the piano part unchanged but opening the other part up to fiddle figuration (according to some sources, Oistrakh was responsible for the adaptation). The form is more robustly conventional than in the Ravel: the first movement has the requisite two principal themes, the second marked by dotted rhythm, and there is even an exposition repeat indicated. After this comes a scherzo, where "Cinderella" is particularly close, and then a slow movement before the finale in the firm common time of the first movement.
