This is the only work composed by Schubert (1797— 1828) for flute and piano. It was written for the Viennese flute-player Ferdinand Bogner in January 1824, but the date of its first performance is not known.As indicated by the title, the work is based on and employs in almost unaltered form the eighteenth song, "Trockne Blumen", from the song cycle "Die schöne Müllerin", Op. 25, settings of poems by Wilhelm Müller which Schubert had completed shortly before in November 1823. The opus number 160 was attached to the work when it was first published posthumously in 1850. Schubert's own manuscript, which bears at the head the French title "Variations pour le Pianoforte et Flüte" is to be found in the Civic Library in Vienna.In the same manner as the song, the work alternates between the keys of E minor and major. The theme and a set of seven variations follow a 37-measure prelude, with the music conceived on a grand scale. The writing for flute, especially in the final variation, gives a full display of the instrument's technical brilliance. Indeed the technical requirements made of the performer must have almost exceeded the potential of the instrument as it existed in Schubert's day, and even today only a virtuoso in total command of his instrument is able to bring off the work successfully. At the bottom end of the instrument's range Schuber calls for a low B, a semitone below the lowest note available on most flutes; it is not known what type of instrument Bogner played, but there is no doubt that this tone could not have been produced by an ordinary flute of the time.
