The first movement is a moderately paced sonata form with three distinct themes which are duly recapitulated in their original order, the second and third of them coming down a fifth to settle in the A tonality of the first. For the slow movement Serly repeated the marking 'Adagio religioso' Bartok had used in his Third Piano Concerto, since the two movements resemble each other in feeling and form, both having simple slow music around a quick atmospheric middle section. Then comes a characteristic 2/4 dance finale, uncharacteristic only in its brevity.
