This viola sonata by I.Genishta was written in the classical style and, in some ways, is close to Beethoven style. It is very clear in form and music language, its theme is melodic and clearly delineated. The contrast of images and moods is emphasized by tempo and tonal contrasts. Along with the nobility of the melodic line characteristic of the composer, his polyphonic mastery should be especially noted in this viola sonata. This Sonata not only shows the growth of professional skill and free mastery of the sonata genre, but undoubtedly reflects, to one degree or another, the features of the development of the Russian composer school of that time with its realistic and democratic tendencies. In this Genishta's viola sonata, the melodic gift of the composer is manifested. This is the first part of the sonata in free transcription for viola and piano by V. Borisovsky.

Iosif Iosifovich Genista was born in Moscow (1795) in the family of a Czech musician. He was a student of the famous Moscow pianist and composer V. Gessler. Genishta was an excellent pianist, and also, apparently, played the cello. In the 20-40s of the 19th century, the name of Genishta as a composer, concertian, teacher and musical figure was often mentioned in memoirs and epistolary literature. As a musician, performer and organizer of Moscow concerts, Genishta sought to popularize classical music and, in particular, Beethoven's work, whose impact to a certain extent affected his own compositions.
