Its parallel thread in musical history has been the way French, or more exactly Parisian, audiences have normally preferred "French" music composed by foreigners - to the genuine home-bred article. Leclair, though French-born, was Italian-trained. Six years in Turin and six more in Amsterdam exposed him to the influence of Corelli and Vivaldi via their pupils Somis and Locatelli. This is a famous Adagio, that was transcribed for viola by E. Abajiev.
