Indeed, it is not by chance that Bach endowed the two slow movements in C minor from the collection (see also bwv 1018) with a continuous, invigorating accompaniment figure. In the Sonata, bwv 1017, however, he at least retains the notation of the strict three-part structure. The practice of holding onto the arpeggiated triads alone provides the movements with their fullness of sound. The complex part-writing makes the two Allegros the most complete of all the collection. In the Adagio , the harpsichord deploys a carpet of triplets onto which the violin weaves its own framework of ideas.
