Bériot systematically modernised Viotti's 'classical' French style, but in distancing himself from the entrenched Parisian formalism of Baillot, Rode and Kreutzer (Viotti's immediate successors), he became standard-bearer for the Franco-Belgian school of violin-playing which rapidly gained ascendency during the latter part of the 19th century. Bériot was celebrated for his bravura technique, which featured ricochet bowing, left-hand pizzicati, harmonics and scordatura tuning - and some of these devices are used in the Scène de Ballet of 1855.
