Two of the loveliest, Liebesleid (Love's Sorrow) and Liebesfreud (Love's Joy), were actually once the source of considerable controversy. Apparently out of modesty, Kreisler originally claimed these original works to be posthumous waltzes by Josef Lanner; it was not until 1935 that Kreisler acknowledged these and other works to be his own. Many contemporary critics were outraged — perhaps because they had missed the obvious: the waltzes (which Kreisler copyrighted in 1910 as "Old Viennese Melodies") are clear distillations of Kreisler's artistic voice.
