Stylistically, the concerto is consistent with a late date of composition, and it has many sterling musical qualities. The expansively conceived and melodically fertile first movement, whose opening theme is familiar from his earlier Le Streghe and Sonata Varsavia. is no mere showpiece despite the brilliance of the solo part. In the slow movement, virtuosity is entirely set aside in favour of a serious and expressive cantilena, which would have allowed Paganini to display his capacity, so admired by Schubert, to "sing like an angel". The Rondo finale typically combines musical vivacity with abundant technical fireworks.

The tour itself prompted a burst of compositional activity, and he completed the Fourth Concerto during his travels in 1830. Until recently it was thought that he also composed his Fifth Concerto around 1830, but this supposition resulted from a misreading of one of his letters. It now appears much more likely that the Fifth Concerto was a product of his last years. This view is supported by the evidence of the single surviving source for the concerto - a solo violon part containing unusually detailed indications of the orchestration. It seems almost certain that the poor state of his health prevented Paganini completing a full orchestral score.
