The suite Visions Fugitives is "Prokofiev's Mikrokosmos". It is'a collection of 20 miniatures written between 1915 and 1917, the shortest of which lasts bare twenty seconds. But the miniature dimensions do not prevent the unique character of each movement from getting across to the listener. All pieces were originally written for piano and compiled as a set in 1917. This is a violin and piano transcription. Almost the contrary: the musical idea is presented directly, without any development to speak of, and with none of the friction of trying to create a 'form'. Prokofiev is projected in these pieces at his most characteristic. The motto to the collection is a quotation from Balmont: "In every passing vision I distinguish worlds full of the shifting play of the colours of the rainbow." This describes the collection precisely, and particularly as a reference to the space and depth concealed to within the miniatures.
