The Poème op.25, filled with chromatic shadings and frequent enharmonic shifts, which Chausson wrote in 1896, seems to have been inspired by some strange and unfamiliar sound-world. The work, the composer's best known, is in fact based on Turgenev's The Song of Triumphant Love (1881), a story of a quasi-fantastic character, whose subject is a peculiar, atmospheric mixture of the Italian Renaissance and Ceylonese exoticism. Chausson 's contemporaries seem, however, to have been unaware of any extra-musical basis for the work. Debussy praised it as "music pure in its inspiration, dispensing with everything descriptive, with everything anecdotal".
