The violin Sonata in A minor which most thoroughly heralds the later, romantic Schubert, especially the mysterious development of the opening movement, rather like a descent into the grave, and the long episodes in the Andante which remind one of the murmur of the stream in the Schöne Müllerin song cycle, written in the flat-laden keys of which the composer was so fond. Likewise, the peasant-style Menuetto was later to have its influence upon Schumann when he came to write his first symphony, whilst the stormy last movement, which closes in an atmosphere of painful resignation, reiterates the cry of revolt heard in the first movement, and which recalls the mood of Erlkönig that Schubert had composed not long beforehand.
