Arvo Part - Fratres for cello and piano (1980)
Arvo Part - Fratres for cello and piano (1980). You can download the PDF sheet music Arvo Part - Fratres for cello and piano (1980) on this page. Fratres by Arvo Pärt dates from 1977 and was first performed by an Estonian early music group. The piece has subsequently been adapted by the composer for several different combinations of instruments, and, also, for cello, but the 1980 version here differs markedly from the others in being a set of variations on the theme of the original work. This transformation of Fratres is for cello and piano. Following a newly- composed preludial section for unaccompanied cello, which traces a gradual crescendo, the hypnotic, chant-like theme is played eight times by the piano while the cello superimposes variations of characteristic simplicity and elegance. The cello part is actually made from the piano part, but it is good for playing. To download PDF, click the "Download PDF" button below the appropriate sheet music image. Fratres is a family of pieces that exists in versions for, among others, ensemble of early instruments, cello ensemble, string quartet and violin and piano. Fratres for string orchestra with percussion features a calm melody repeated with slight variations during nine phrases and superimposed over a drone (A-E) in the celli and basses. One of the middle parts takes care of the tintinnabulation, i.e. that part plays only the notes in the A minor triad, A-C-E. Between each phrase there is a short interlude in the percussion section, played by claves and bass drum — an interlude that gives time for contemplation over what has just been heard. |
