Twelve «G-dur» variations for piano and cello on theme from «Judas Maccabee» oratorio by Hendel WoO 45 were composed in 1796 and devoted to Maria Lichnowsky, the Princess. Hendel's oratorio, being then successfully performed in Vienna, was very popular there. Obviously, this was an incitement for Beethoven to create these variations. A.Thayer indicates there was an influence of Gottfried von Swieten, The Baron, as well.
