Cassado's shorter works for cello and piano in his post-romantic idiom, abundant in rhythmic detail, virtuosic elements and often with poetic titles. Cassado, one of the greatest cellists of the twentieth century and a notable composer, has remained a controversial and marginalised figure in classical music society, both on a personal level, due to his liberal approach to transcription, experimentation with the instrument and edition of musical scores through performance.
