While in Paris, young Gaspar was surrounded by some of the leading musical figures of the early 20th century, including Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel and Erik Satie. It is interesting to note that in the later recording from 1947 Cassado emphasises this cultural trait much less. This is in line with later recordings by other cellists of Spanish works, where the rhythms are performed almost exactly as written. Indeed, no recording after those by Cassado displays the same rhythmical nuances to any greater extent, including those by modern Catalan cellists like Claret. Indeed, all the rhytmical details mentioned so far are clearly linked to a certain time in Catalan and Spanish music history, rather than to Catalan culture itself. |
