As a composer, Cassado in his last years turned to well-known formulas: shorter cello encores on the one hand and the use of some type of existing material for his creations on the other hand, which resulted in transcriptions, theme and variation works and creative editions. He also extended the repertoire of solo cello works: after producing the Solo Suite and the Bourree transcription early in his career he published his Fuga in the style of Handel in 1949 and wrote ambitious solo cello versions of piano works, such as Etude Op. 25 \To. 1 by Chopin, Prelude No. 21 from Das Wohltemperierte Klavier by J.S. Bach and the guitar work El vito by Sainz de la Maja. As later chapters of this book will show, these solo cello transcriptions arc particularly illustrative regarding the interaction of different aspects of Cassado's music making.
