The cellist and composer Jean-Louis Duport (known as "the younger") was born in Paris in 1749. He was cellist at the Opera and at the Concert Spiritual. His works include "Essai sur le doigté du violoncelle et sur la conduite de l'archet" (Essay on the fingering and bowing technique of the cello), "6 Concertos" (pub. Paris, Janet & Cotelle), "Three Duos of Cello (Paris, Sieber), as well as sonatas, romances and nocturnes for various instruments. Duport was greatly influenced by the playing of Viotti and attempted to adapt the style of the great violinist to his instrument. He is the originator of the modern cello technique.
