The only one of the shorter pieces to be written after 1900 is the Sérénade. The change of style is immediately apparent. Dating from 1908, and dedicated to Pablo Casals (who waxed enthusiastic about it, but seems never to have programmed it), this unusual cello piece is in two distinct sections that both appear to derive inspiration from the musical past. The opening melody—after the piano's initial flourishes—seems to hark back to the world of the troubadours, while the middle section recalls the spirit of the baroque keyboard masters.
