Faure - Sonata N2 for cello and piano op.117
Faure - Sonata N2 for cello and piano. You can download the sheet music Faure - Sonata N2 for cello and piano on this page. The second cello sonata was written in 1922. The ecstatic energy of the first movement is all the more astonishing when one considers that it is the work of an increasingly enfeebled man in his late seventies. Perhaps Aaron Copland had this movement in mind when he wrote that Fauré's works "become ever more spiritually youthful and serene as he becomes physically older and weaker." In its noble C minor melody, the slow movement—originally written as a funeral march for wind band to commemorate the centenary of Napoleon's death— recalls the Elégie; but here there is an answering voice that eventually brings the movement to a peaceful close in C major. The last movement is perhaps Fauré's most exciting music for cello and piano; its combination of windswept drama and whimsical playfulness brings Fauré's contribution to the cello literature to a joyous conclusion.
