Galliard - Cello sonata in F (Moffat)

Galliard - Cello sonata in F (Moffat). You can download the PDF sheet music Galliard - Cello sonata in F (Moffat) on this page. Thanks partly to the efforts of humble arrangers like the prolific Alfred Moffat who, among a mass of other similar things, made some beautiful arrangements of pieces for string instruments. He often offered his services as an arranger and, Mr. Alfred Moffat, as editor and arranger of this Johann Ernst Galliard cello sonata, has done his work well.

Galliard, John Ernest (1687-1749). German oboist, organist, writer and composer of theater music, expatriated in London. Galliard came to England in 1706 to take up a court appointment in the service of Queen Anne's consort. In 1710 he became organist to the widow of Charles II at Somerset House, and at the same time oboist at the Queen's Theater, playing in Handel's operas under the composer. In the meantime, Galliard joined forces with Lewis Theobald to produce masques and pantomimes at John Rich's theater in Lincoln's Inn Fields. His frustration as an opera composer is revealed in A Critical Discourse upon Operas in England, on which he collaborated with Hughes, and in the entr'actes satirizing Italian opera singers in his third opera. The Happy Captive. A year later he published Observations on the Florid Song, a translation of Tosi's 1723 singing manual. In addition to his theater works, Galliard composed anthems and cantatas; but today he is best known for his 1733 collection of sonatas for bassoon or cello and continuo.
