The summer of 1890 marked Rachmaninoff s first visit to his cousin's family estate of Ivanovka, situated in the Tambov district some 300 miles south of Moscow. The Satin family had invited a number of guests at that time, including the Skalon family - cousins of the Satins but no relation to Rachmaninoff. Attracted to the youngest of the Skalon daughters, he dedicated this, the first of many pieces Rachmaninoff composed at Ivanovka to her. The piece was first published by Muzgiz, Moscow. 1948. Heading: Vera Dmitriyevna Skalon. (Russian) - Lied. Although Rachmaninoff indicated plural usage here, there is little evidence to suggest that more than one instrument was ever used. 5 measures crossed out on p. 2. At the end the manuscript is signed and dated: "6 August 1890. Ivanovka - Sergei Rachmaninoff." To download PDF, click the "Download PDF" button below the appropriate sheet music image.
