Two Pieces, Op. 2 ('Prelude' and 'Oriental Dance') were written in 1892 for the cellist Anatoly Brandukov (1856-1930). Perhaps the most famous Russian cellist after Karl Davidov, Brandukov was the dedicatee of Tchaikovsky's cello works (Tchaikovsky wrote his 'Pezzo Capriccioso' for the young cellist) and until 1906 he lived mostly in Paris, coming frequently to Russia to give concerts. Brandukov and Rachmaninov were friends; Brandukov was best man when the composer married Natalia Satina on 29 April 1902 in Moscow.
