Ravel - Pavane pour une infante defunte for cello and piano

Ravel - Pavane pour une infante defunte for cello and piano. You can download the PDF sheet music Ravel - Pavane pour une infante defunte for cello and piano on this page. Ravel dedicated this Pavane to the Princess Edmond de Polignac, a patron of the arts who commissioned the work and whose salon became a meeting place for musicians, poets and painters. Ravel's friend Ricardo Vines gave the first performance of the work at a concert held by the Société Nationale on 5 April 1902. Pavane pour une infante défunte is a musical gem that displays Ravel's precocious awareness of iridescent colours, delightful harmonies and tender lyricism.

This composition brought renown to Ravel, who at the time was studying composition with Gabriel Fauré, and made him especially popular with the ladies. The title of this stately dance suggests a funeral procession for a young princess at the Spanish court, but in fact it was simply inspired by the assonant combination of the words infante and defunte. Ravel himself was very critical of his Pavane on hearing a performance of the orchestral version, lamenting that it was too heavily influenced by Chabrier and that the form was rather weak.

Pavane pour une infante défunte is one of Ravel' early compositions: Ravel wrote the piano version in 1899 (the piano accompaniment of the present arrangement is based on this version) and later arranged it for orchestra in 1910.
