The successive harmony at the beginning of the Second Violin Sonata by Schumann is marked "kurz und egergisch". The second movement scherzo is performed with a strong rhythm containing both massiveness and strength, exactly in accordance with "sehr lebhaft". The tonal shading ol the first trio which is played melodiously is also very impressive. The third movement is variations based on a chorale. Because of this extreme beauty, the tragic scherzo theme draws us back suddenly into a deep sorrowful abyss-the expression here is simply hair raising. It might not be necessary to comment on the 4th movement "Bewegt". This part is the human drama that Schumann wrote in this cello Sonata, creating energy with every musical nuance and expressed with unlimited imagination.
