| Schnittke was one of the most prolific composers of the twentieth century. His works are considered an established part of the standard repertoire for orchestras, chamber groups and soloists. During the 1970s and 1980s Schnittke enjoyed enormous, and unusual, popularity in Russia. 'His music used to be our language, more perfect than the verbal one' wrote one Russian critic. Concert promoters used to call the police to prevent halls from overcrowding and chaos when Schnittkes music was performed in Moscow, Leningrad or Novosibirsk. All performances of Schnittkes music were important events for Soviet listeners: in Schnittkes music they used to find metaphysical ideas and spiritual values, absent in real life during the endless years of'terror', 'thaw', 'cold war', or 'stagnation. |
