Bach - Chromatic Fantasy for Viola (Primrose edition)
Bach - Chromatic Fantasy for Viola (Primrose edition). You can download the PDF sheet music Bach - Chromatic Fantasy for Viola on this page. The Chromatic Fantasia and Fugue in D minor, BWV 903, was first published in 1802. The oldest manuscript, an anonymous copy, bears the date of 6 December 1730. It is indeed a fantasia of the improvised type (intonatio, preambulum, prelude, toccata) spontaneously invented, as early as the middle of the sixteenth century, by lutenists and then harpsichordists to please the ear, and fingers. This tradition was developed and enhanced, mainly by Frescobaldi and Froberger, but also by the best French composers, Louis Couperin and Jean-Henri d'Anglebert in the non-measured preludes: harmonic adventure, rhythmic shocks, and outbursts of virtuoso 'passagi' mingling with, or fighting against, recitatives of a theatrical type. This is a Primrose Viola transcription.
