Bartok final string concerto, was for the viola, having been commissioned by William Primrose. This was one of the works on which he was engaged during the last year of his life, and after his death it was completed by his pupil Tibor Serly. Bartok had sketched out the entire work from beginning to end around a solo part that Serly was able to use practically intact, but the orchestral substance was left in a thin state, particularly in the last two of the three movements, and there were few indications for instrumentation; it also seems possible that Bartok would have developed the last two movements more extensively.
