He studied at the Royal Academy of Music, the competing teaching institution to the Royal College. Bax's youth and early manhood was a golden (and self-indulgent) time for the young composer, growing up in the family mansion in Hampstead. Bax had a bad attack of Celtic twilight that influenced him for many years and is reflected in many of his works. Bax's student works are interesting but it was some time before he acquired the technique. Throughout his life Bax wrote chamber music, often for particular players to perform, for example, his viola sonata.
