Another piece that Beethoven never himself published is the popular Bagatelle in A minor known as "Fur Elise" — though the title may be a misnomer. It was the Beethoven biographer Ludwig Nohl who published the complete work in 1867, using an autograph that had been owned by Therese Malfatli, the daughter of one of Beethoven's physicians. It is probable that in 1810 Beethoven proposed marriage to her but was turned down. According to Nohl, the autograph — which has not been seen since hisday — was inscribed: "For Elise, on April 27, as a memento of L. van Beethoven." But in the 1920's Max Unger suggested that Nohl had misread the composer's handwriting; it seems more likely that the piece was written for Therese Malfatli ("Fur Therese").
