Brahms - Viola sonata Op.120 N1. You can download the PDF sheet music Brahms - Viola sonata Op.120 N1 on this page. Sonata no. 1 in F minor op. 120
- Allegro appassionato - Sostenuto ed espressivo
- Andante un poco Adagio
- Allegretto grazioso
- Vivace
Lyrical flow also requires an appropriate tempo, so that the cantabile line is neither rushed nor out of breath. The fastest section is the Vivace in the finale of the F Minor Sonata. In order to evade any temptation to force the tempo, Brahms regulates it with the directions grazioso and especially leggiero. With its Andante un poco Adagio, the second movement of the F Minor Sonata is the slowest. Brahms scales the tempo at various levels in between, Andante con moto. Allegretto grazioso, Allegro amabile, and Allegro appassionato. Thus, even his movement headings reflect his intention to give priority to the lyrical over all else.

The two Viola Sonatas, op. 120, have never received their due from writers on Brahms. Reference to the tonal enchantment of the clarinet may account for the fact of their composition, but it does not explain their luxuriant sound quality, which suggests that Brahms had the alternative string version in mind from the outset. - In recent years the technique of musical analysis, made more acute by the experience of twelve-note composition, has shown the extent to which these Sonatas of Brahms, hitherto considered only in terms of tonal impression, were fashioned in the most strictly rational manner, not in the "melancholia of incapacity" (Nietzsche) but with incredibly logical pursuit to its conclusion of the tradition of Classical-romantic music, on the threshold of modern constructive techniques. |
