Glinka - often considered the Father of Russian Music - is not best known for his piano music, even though he wrote a fair amount for the instrument, from his earliest youth right up со the year before his death. Although he is known to have had only three lessons with Field, there can be little doubt that the older composer's influence was significant. The earliest examples of Glinka's piano music, like this Barcarolle in G major, are in the form of sets of variations while the later music often displays a more intimate and contemplative side to the composer's character.
