This two-movement suite was written for the viola, a string instrument (like the violin) for which this talented composer has the feelings of a true virtuoso and inspired artist. This is the early work, dated 1929. Khachaturian wrote some of his most affecting music for the viola, and his music is again being championed by a rising generation of young viola players. In this suite, composer developed an "Armenian" style from the trans-Caucasian folk and urban music he knew from his childhood. Spicy harmonies, combined with the improvisatory lines and the use of the viola harmonics evoke a folk instrument sonority. Aram Khachaturyan started writing for viola early but, unfortunatelly, his musical viola legacy is still little known and underappreciated.
