This Viola transcription of Concerto for A major originally derives from sketches for a first movement of a concerto for bassett horn in G major made by the composer towards the end of 1789. In September 1791 it was reworked for Stadler's bassett clarinet, at which time the transposition into A major was probably made. This instrument, which was remodified according to Stadler's specifications by the instrument maker Theodore Lotz and which was able to produce a note a major third lower than that produced by the usual A clarinet, does unfortunately no longer survive. The autograph of the work, though probably written for the bassett clarinet, has been lost, and the present text is based on the earliest edition printed by Johann Andre (Offenbach) and Breitkopf & Hartel (Leipzig) in 1801, which specifies the A clarinet. In this viola edition a number of adjustments were made to facilitate performance of notes so low as to be only possible on the bassett horn by, for example, transposing them up an octave.
