Mussorgsky - Gopak (Hopak) for viola and piano. You can download the PDF sheet music Mussorgsky - Gopak (Hopak) for viola and piano on this page. Gopak (Hopak) from Sorochintsy Fair (in a beautiful transcription for viola and piano) is a wedding dance scene. A gopak (or hopak) is a traditional dance in the Ukraine; it is energetic music in duple time and it can be danced either as a group or solo. The interval of a perfect fifth at the beginning evokes a traditional Ukrainian string instrument called bandura. This is a good example of traditional music being incorporated into art music, especially for viola. This piece can also be found in Act 3, Scene 2 of an original opera. Modest Mussorgsky seems to have decided to turn the Ukrainian tale into a comic opera in 1874. In 1875 he began work on the comic opera in earnest. He fashioned Gogol's Sorochintsi Fair narrative into a 3-act outline, but he then worked on the opera piecemeal, starting with Act 2 and roughing out the libretto for the various sections as he composed them. Between August and October 1879, during a concert tour, Mussorgsky included in the programmes fragments from Sorochintsi Fair and was encouraged by the audience response. The dynamic dance Hopak - have pursued an independent existence in the concert halls, becoming the only parts of Sorochintsi Fair that most music lovers know. This viola transcription was made by V. Borisovsky.
