Porter - Suite for viola solo

Porter - Suite for viola solo

Porter - Suite for viola solo. You can download the PDF sheet music Porter - Suite for viola solo on this page. The Suite for Viola Alone is an early work, written in 1930 and it demonstrates his true understanding of the viola. The suite comprises four movements: Lento, Allegro furioso, Larghetto espressivo and Allegro spirituoso. The first movement, with detailed instructions regarding dynamics and tempo, is supple and sensitive. In the second movement, double stops create a technically elaborate and turbulent texture. There is a drastic change in the third movement as the melody sings out to the listeners. The concluding fourth movement maintains a consistent tempo throughout and brings the work to a brisk finish.

The American composer Quincy Porter (1897-1966) studied under Horatio Parker, Vincent d'lndy and Ernest Bloch. He later taught at the New England Conservatory of Music and at Yale University. His compositional technique freely mixed the staunch structure of the German style with French flair and he was noted for his interest in counterpoint. His experience as a violist in a string quartet gave him a particular sympathy in writing for string instruments, and chamber music was his forte. In 1954 he won the Pulitzer Prize for his Concerto Concertante for two pianos and orchestra.
