Prokofiev prepared an orchestral suite from the complete ballet Romeo and Juliet score, the first performance of which in Moscow on 24 November 1936 proved so successful that he followed it up in 1937 with a second suite, in addition to preparing a piano arrangement of ten numbers from the ballet. (A third orchestral suite dates from 1946.) These suites familiarized audiences with the music of Romeo and Juliet to such an extent, of course, that it was impossible to resist growing demands for a full staging of the ballet.  Romeo and Juliet emerged as one of Prokofiev's supreme achievements, and his communication of Shakespeare's passion and pathos ensure the work's permanent place in the repertoire. As was Prokofiev's custom, he prepared concert suites, two of which were performed before the ballet itself - a third followed later. The passion in the Romeo and Juliet movement (this is the Balcony Scene), and in Romeo with Juliet before his departure, is brought out with great warmth; and the tragic apotheosis of Romeo at Juliet's tomb could hardly be put across with more grandeur.
