Suites for Solo Viola, Op. 131d, form the last part of an opus, written in April 1914. Like the works for solo violin written in the preceding years, they represent, to a certain extent, the opposite extreme from Reger's own chamber works and his late, sometimes almost impressionistically coloured orchestral pieces. It is also remarkable that Reger attempts not only to approach his deeply revered Bach in works that are so radically pared down, but also to distance himself from the tone poems of composers such as Strauss.
