The base of all pieces for a solo string instrument are Bach's Six Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin, and his Six Suites for Solo Cello. Even though certain outstanding nineteenth-century virtuosos wrote tailor-made compositions for unaccompanied instruments, Reger was the first to recognize the true importance of Bach's works in the history of music and to examine them from a creative point of view - a wholly unfashionable approach at the time, which nonetheless laid the foundation for a new repertoire of chamber music for solo instruments in the 1920s.
