Carl Stamitz's less brother, Anton, five years his junior, has been unjustly neglected by musicology: until a few years ago, only some chamber works were available. His numerous instrumental concertos have not even been bibliographically encompassed. It is therefore all the more remarkable that new editions in this genre have recently been taken up enthusiastically by notable soloists. Of the four viola concertos by Anton Stamitz published by Parisian firms before 1785, the fourth appears herewith in its first modern edition, the third having appeared in 1971. The musical substance of the concertos reveals the hand of a master who, as a much-renowed viola virtuoso in his own day, knew how to write for his instrument.
