In the second half of the century the born Mannheimer (the last bastion of the viola) and long Parisian resident Karl Stamitz (1748- 1801) was the last virtuoso of the instrument. Besides different compositions for viola, he wrote many sonatas for the instrument among which, the 1780 composition with viola accompaniment with variations on the then popular song: "Marlborough s'en va-t-en guerre" in the Finale; a virtuoso piece with flageolet tones.
