The Second Sonata for solo violin belongs to the time when the composer had gradually sought to broaden her compositional style, incorporating more advanced means, possible to explore after the Stalinist period, which had kept Polish musicians in a state of isolation from the vigorously developing European avant-garde culture. She was not interested in pointillism considering this path too narrow, but was attracted by colouristic possibilities of sonorism and electronic music. Thus the Sonata, especially in comparison to her previous violin works, exposes a new concept of form and an atonal expressivity, beginning with an exploration of minor second sonority.
