Strangely, the first sonata opens without the violin. The harpsichordist's right hand creates a false trio texture by playing two parts in thirds, and the whole first movement could be seen as the violin's struggle to assert itself. At first ignored by the harpsichord, it is drawn into the keyboard's figuration and finally silences its partners with a passionate, cadenza-like outburst. Thus Bach immediately establishes a tension between the three protagonists which proceed with varying and unpredictable amounts of agreement and discord. Sometimes they share material democratically, usually in fugal movements. Sometimes the bass is relegated to a traditional, accompanimental role, as in the first sonata's third movement (I-iii), where its eighth notes, full of space, walk on inexorably.
