Bach - Violin Sonata N3 E-dur BWV 1016

Bach - Violin Sonata N3 E-dur BWV 1016. You can download the PDF sheet music Bach - Violin Sonata N3 E-dur BWV 1016 on this page.

  1. Adagio
  2. Allegro
  3. Adagio ma non tanto
  4. Allegro

The powerful accompanying figures which prop up the recitative character of the delicate ornaments of the violin in the Adagio have the effect of appearing sharp and divisive. Bach forsakes the trio structure, and the music written for the harpsichord (which here plays an accompanying role) could be regarded as an example of an actual realization by him of a figured bass: the bass is driven in octaves, the right hand consisting of richly-ornamented alternated chords and repeatedly interposing a countermelody into the action.

Through making use of Mattheson's analysis, another meaning can be applied to the brilliant bario-lages of the second Allegro, by recalling the Preludio from the Partita in E major, bwv 1006 which Bach also reused to open his Cantata, bwv 29. Here, the clear and bright bariolages represent the sound of the mourning knell. The Adagio ma non tanto of this sonata is the longest middle movement of the cycle and beguiles with an unsuspected depth of expression and emotion. As in apassacaglia, this movement is characterized by a lamentation-like descending bass. The violin and the harpsichord right hand alternatively take over the plaintive chords of the accompaniment. In the brilliant concluding three-part Allegro, Bach ventures into remote keys such as G sharp minor.
